Introduction

The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand has been blessed with nature’s bounty from aromatic

plants and flowers to medicinal herbs. Perhaps this has also been the reason why this divine

land is called ‘Dev Bhumi’ or God’s land. Uttarakhand was carved out on 9th November 2000

as a separate state from Uttar Pradesh. People from hills have romanticized nature, cared for

and protected it in every possible way especially the women who have been the custodian and

torchbearers of culture and traditions and also the social awakening here. The nature worship

festivals and traditions like Phooldeyi and Maiti and movements like Chipko Aandolan is the

testimony of an umbilical relationship of a Pahadi with nature, Uttarakhand lacked a

dedicated museum showcasing its rich & diverse flora.

The HimSurabhi museum aims to showcase the rich and diverse flora of the Himalayan

region of the Uttarakhand state. The museum is a tribute to the Great Himalaya & its people.
